Summary
The classroom drama returns after an eight-week break. New pupil Fergal arrives with a warning from his mother that this is his last chance, but no sooner has he arrived than he meets Barry and the pair end up dealing drugs to their fellow pupils - with disastrous consequences for Harley. The teachers are surprised when Lorraine announces Nikki as the new deputy head - an appointment she has made without consultation. However, when Michael confronts Lorraine, she reminds him who is holding the purse strings. Grantly struggles to keep his illness a secret from his colleagues, but when Maggie's hopes of donating a kidney to her husband are dashed, she can no longer keep quiet. There’s frantic setting-up of new storylines as the school gates open for a new term: the surprise appointment of a new deputy head, the arrival of pale, sullen Fergal Doherty, a new boy with dangerous baggage, and mousy Audrey’s “souvenir” from her African holiday.
Of course there are storylines hanging over from last term, too: Grantly’s ongoing kidney problems, Kacey’s decision to become Robbie (and brother Barry’s refusal to countenance such a thing) and the secret wedding of Connor and Imogen. But along with the news that several characters are leaving shortly, the biggest concern is what Lorraine’s accountant has to say.
