Episode 1: Episode 1

Summary

Neil Pearson and Nicola Stephenson join the cast as new headmaster Vaughan Fitzgerald and his partner, art teacher Allie Westbrook, as Waterloo Road opens its doors for another new term. Vaughan is the kind of dynamic, forward-thinking chap the school needs, and while he and Allie are madly in love, their home life is far from easy thanks to their blended family - they have four children between them from previous relationships, and none of them gets along. Meanwhile, Christine promises she will help Darren deal with his difficult situation at home, but nothing could prepare them for what happens when they try to confront his mother. Finally, George discovers the hard way why nobody messes with the Barry family

Review

There I was thinking that we’d seen the end of Waterloo Road after the announcement earlier this year that it was to be axed. But no, there are 20 more episodes to endure – I mean enjoy – before it disappears from our screens for good in 2015 after a nine-year run.

This instalment is all about fresh starts. It’s the first day of a new school year and with Christine (Laurie Brett) demoted to a teaching position, the path is clear for principled new headmaster Vaughan Fitzgerald (Neil Pearson) to make his mark. However he’s barely finished introducing himself to a cynical staffroom when his estranged wife rolls into town to wage emotional warfare on Vaughan and his new girlfriend – art teacher Miss Westbrook (Nicola Stephenson).

Elsewhere, stuffy Mr Windsor (Angus Deayton) has had enough of gold-digging dinner lady Carol (Zöe Lucker) following a nauseous European cruise, while Christine supports one of the school’s most troubled students through a personal crisis.
