Episode 7: Mockingbird

Summary

Tyrion enlists an unlikely ally, while Daario entreats Daenerys to allow him to do what he does best. Jon's warnings about the Wall's vulnerability fall on deaf ears, while Brienne and Pod follow a new lead as they continues their mission to track down the Stark girls. Fantasy drama, starring Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke

Review

After the barnstorming finale to last week’s episode, this is a quieter affair. Only one display of nudity, a paltry couple of disembowelments and stabbings, and a deadly kick through a high trapdoor. By Game of Thrones standards, it’s a down week.

Still, some important events are put in motion as we see the consequences of Tyrion’s choice to face justice by combat. As his potential champions turn him down in particularly heartbreaking fashion, at the eleventh hour his deliverance appears from an unlikely source.

Peter Dinklage’s performance as the unfortunate Tyrion has never been better, as he ranges from wry resignation, fear, bargaining and then, finally desperate hope when his fate looks a little less sealed.

As more storylines and characters pile up and the series becomes more fragmented, it’s the strong performances from Dinklage and others that keep Game of Thrones anchored in a sort of reality, and help it remain must-watch TV. Even if the naked bodies and beheadings are a little lacking from time to time…
