Jon Snow finds himself on trial at Castle Black, he and the Night's Watch face their biggest challenge, and Tyrion receives an unexpected visit from Jaime.
Game of Thrones season 4 comes to an end in a smorgasbord of violence, chance meetings and shocking changes to the status quo. It’s a confident finale for a series that has only grown in stature this year, toppling The Sopranos as HBO’s most popular ever show in the states.
While rightly praised for its huge and varied cast of characters, this season did sometimes suffer a little under the pressure of devoting enough story time to each of them. Some major characters don’t even make the finale, a decision that feels a little jarring, even if it serves a narrative purpose.
Despite this, season 4 is probably the best yet. The shocks were plentiful, the evolution of characters was believable and affecting and, above all else, Joffrey got his. Where will our friends in Westeros head next?
