Jon Snow finds himself on trial at Castle Black, he and the Night's Watch face their biggest challenge, and Tyrion receives an unexpected visit from Jaime.
After the shock ending of last week’s Game of Thrones, the series could be forgiven for taking a week off. And it does take a holiday of sorts, leaving behind the political machinations of the capital city and surrounding areas to take a sojourn north. The Wall, a big icy border fence designed to keep out savages and monsters, is under attack, and it’s up to the remains of the Night’s Watch to knock back the invaders.
Concentrating an entire Game of Thrones episode on a climactic battle is a tactic that worked well for season 2’s episode 9, Blackwater, but here it doesn’t work quite so well at first. This series hasn’t built up the dangers facing the Wall, and so it’s hard to feel the tension that made Blackwater work so well.
Still, by the end of the episode it all pays off – and in the heat of the moment, you may have forgotten there was any other story to miss out on.
