Lord Eddard Stark faces a dilemma when he is asked to serve at the side of King Robert Baratheon, Bran is crippled after discovering a revelation, and suffers another attempt on his life.
Those who have weathered the wordy longueurs will be rewarded as the x-rated fantasy explodes into vicious life. Bookended by extravagant violence (horse fans, skip the tournament), it’s an episode of bristling exchanges: between Ned Stark and his friend, King Baratheon; the king and his wayward wife Cersei; and, crucially, Stark and the hot-headed knight Jaime Lannister.
As the honourable Stark, conflicted by punishing codes of conduct, Sean Bean is the robust heart of the series, and the glue that binds together all the peripheral intrigues. The genre “fantasy” seems inappropriate amid all the earthy cut-and-thrusting, but then you catch sight of some impossible landscapes, which are rather beautiful, in a Roger-Dean-album-cover kind of way.
