Episode 1: Winter Is Coming

Summary

Lord Eddard Stark is torn between his family and an old friend when he is asked to serve at the side of King Robert Baratheon. However, neither man is aware that their country is on the verge of a bitter power struggle that could lead to its destruction. First episode of the fantasy drama based on George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels, starring Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke

Review

Fights, betrayal, a splayed, headless corpse and so much breast and leg you’re getting sick of the sight of it. It’s Christmas all right. If you’re looking to escape the annual family massacre, find a quiet place and settle in for this festive Game of Thrones marathon.

For the next 12 days Sky Atlantic is showing the entire series up to the end of series four, with three or four episodes every night. It’s perfect for getting new viewers hooked, but longtime fans will also enjoy a refresher: from three dragons a-laying (waste to the countryside) and two siblings kissing to a red wedding ceremon-ee.

If you can’t wrest control of the TV from the kids (when you play the game of the remote, you win or you watch Shaun the Sheep for a fortnight) it’s all available online and on your phone afterwards. Lock the door to the bathroom, install yourself on the throne and have a very bloody Christmas.
