Episode 3: High Sparrow

Summary

In King's Landing, Queen Margaery spends time with her new husband King Tommen. Elsewhere, fugitive Tyrion and Varys walk the Long Bridge of Volantis, and in Braavos, Arya sees the Many-Faced God. Fantasy drama, starring Natalie Dormer and Peter Dinklage

Review

Has Cersei (Lena Headey) met her match? Natalie Dormer’s Margaery has married Cersei’s last son King Tommen (after her last, less than fortunate wedding feast with Tommen’s brother Joffrey), and her pillow whispers that he should man up to Mummy appears to be working. Laying the gauntlet at Cersei could prove a dangerous game, however.

One also can’t help feeling that Little Finger’s wish to marry Sansa to Ramsay Bolton – perhaps the nastiest character in all of Thrones, and that’s amid rather stiff competition – will also require a certain amount of marriage guidance.

The glacial Sansa Stark hasn’t had a brilliant list of matches, but Ramsay makes the sadistic psycho Joffrey look like a Disney character. This episode sees series five click nicely into gear as we meet Jonathan Pryce’s intriguing ascetic High Sparrow for the first time. And there are crucial and interesting plot developments for Thrones leading lights Jon Snow, Tyrion, Arya and Brienne – who is still doggedly pursuing Sansa but appears to have warmed to her doltish Squire, Pod. Well, I always liked him.
