Episode 5: The Bells

Summary

Varys betrays his queen, and Daenerys brings her forces to King's Landing as the explosive final battle for the Iron Throne begins. Starring Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington and Peter Dinklage

Review

Game of Thrones’ penultimate episodes tend to be the series’ biggest moments, focused on notable deaths – Ned and Robb Stark, Princess Shireen – or huge battles, so normally we’d be expecting some truly brutal scenes in this next-to-last instalment.

However, this year Thrones has already confounded expectations. Killing off its main villain halfway through the series was a twist few expected, but now the action has shifted away from the war against the Night King to yet more in-fighting as Daenerys and her allies head south to take on Cersei.

That is, of course, if the cracks within the Targaryen-Stark alliance don’t widen now that their common enemy is gone and their very different goals become clearer…
