Game of Thrones’ penultimate episodes tend to be the series’ biggest moments, focused on notable deaths – Ned and Robb Stark, Princess Shireen – or huge battles, so normally we’d be expecting some truly brutal scenes in this next-to-last instalment.
However, this year Thrones has already confounded expectations. Killing off its main villain halfway through the series was a twist few expected, but now the action has shifted away from the war against the Night King to yet more in-fighting as Daenerys and her allies head south to take on Cersei.
