For decades, comic books have been split down the middle. On one side is DC, the historic house of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. On the other, the upstarts Marvel, fielding heroes like Spider-Man, the X Men and the Avengers. Truly a clash of the Titans.

The rival publishers have traded blows for decades (with the occasional baffling crossover) but now there is an entirely new battlefield: the movies.

Marvel’s experiment with replicating the interconnected universe of the comics, where superheroes often drop in on each other, has been a massive success. What started with Iron Man resulted in The Avengers. Now DC is playing catch-up, with the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice intended to launch their wider film universe.
