Episode 1: Episode 1

Summary

First episode of the comedy about the romance between a couple with differing cultures and backgrounds. Gavin and Stacey have flirted for months on the phone at work but have never met up - until she travels from Wales to London to see him. Mathew Horne and Joanna Page star alongside Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Ruth Jones and James Corden

Review

I like to think BBC director-general Tony Hall has a glass case in his office that is only to be opened at times of national emergency. He has just broken into it and dished out the medicine an anxious viewing public needs at this point – a classic repeat of Gavin & Stacey.

I mean, it’s clearly been shown before, but that’s not the point. Last year’s Gavin & Stacey special was the most watched programme on Christmas Day, reaching 11.6 million of us and cementing the Barry/Billericay clan’s place in our hearts. Tonight, BBC One shows the very first episode. “This’ll be a hit,” said Radio Times on 13 May 2007. How right we were.

It gets off to a mildly lascivious start as long-distance sweethearts Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanne Page) first meet, flanked by their pals Smithy and Nessa (writers Corden and Jones). Then we settle down into the earthy, affectionate portrayal of close friends and family that was the recipe for a modern classic.
