Episode 37: Edward Snowden: Spies and the Law

Summary

Panorama presents the BBC's first interview with Edward Snowden, the man responsible for the biggest ever release of top secret intelligence files.

Review

Edward Snowden wanted to start a debate about digital surveillance. He succeeded on a global scale he hadn’t thought possible. In 2013, Snowden leaked a colossal cache of classified files from the US National Security Agency, showing that ordinary citizens and foreign powers are routinely spied on in minute detail. Since then he’s been in exile in Russia, continuing to talk lucidly about what right our rulers have to pry into our affairs.

With the British government once again about to try to pass legislation known as “the snooper’s charter”, formalising the recording and retention of your phone and internet use, Snowden is interviewed by Peter Taylor.
