Episode 1: Heroes and Villains

Summary

Del feels down on his luck after the council rejects his application for a home improvement grant, but his spirits are raised when he hears about a fancy-dress party across town. David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst and Buster Merryfield star as the wheeler-dealers in the first part of the Christmas 1996 trilogy. With Tessa Peake-Jones, Gwyneth Strong, Douglas Hodge and Angela Bruce

Review

Radio Times readers voted Heroes and Villains (from 1996) as their favourite ever Only Fools and Horses Christmas episode, and their reward is a repeat screening on Gold. Even if you can’t place the title, all you need to know is that it’s “the one where Del and Rodney dress up as Batman and Robin”.

The hapless pair are invited to a fancy dress party and decide to go along as the Caped Crusaders. But their plans are almost scuppered when their Reliant Robin fails to live up to its name and breaks down. As the pair run through the foggy darkness to the party, they happen upon a real-life crime… and you doubtless know the rest.
