Episode 1: Dragonstone

Summary

Jon organises the North's defences, Cersei tries to even the odds, Daenerys comes home and Arya reminds the Freys that the North remembers. Sam adapts to life in Oldtown, and the Night King makes his way south

Review

We’ve reached the penultimate run of the violent, sexually candid fantasy spectacular and the bottom currently warming the Iron Throne belongs to the chillingly ruthless (and now childless) Cersei (Lena Headey). But even the well-resourced and cunning lady Lannister would do well to better the Dothraki army – and Daenerys’s dragons – in open battle, as seems to be her ultimate destiny…

It’s all to play for, though, and, pleasingly we’ve now gone far beyond the books, so everything will at least be relatively spoiler-free. Not that that will stop all the usual speculation, with some wise Maesters anticipating an eventual triumph for one or more of Westeros’s women. Yes, the Night King’s army of the dead are a pretty tough oppo in anyone’s book, but it would be a brave and foolish man who bets against anyone called the Mother of Dragons.
