Episode 33: The Khashoggi Murder Tapes

Summary

Jane Corbin investigates the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and asks if the West has turned a blind eye in pursuit of lucrative trade deals?

Review

One year ago, journalist Jamal Khashoggi visited Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul to collect documents for his planned wedding. Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and prominent critic of the Riyadh government, was murdered in the consulate and his body dismembered.

For Panorama, reporter Jane Corbin speaks to those who have listened to covert recordings from inside the consulate that were subsequently released by the Turkish authorities, revealing details of what happened to Khashoggi, the hit squad sent to kill him and the cover-up that followed. She hears evidence that, far from being the “rogue operation” the regime claims, responsibility for the murder goes to the highest levels of the Saudi Kingdom.
