The BBC adaptation of Ford Madox Ford's novels will go up against police drama Line of Duty, which stars Martin Compston and Vicky McClure, and last summer's trio of Shakespeare adaptations The Hollow Crown. All three of the programmes up for best TV category come from BBC2.

In the comedy category, Olympic mockumentary, starring Downton's Hugh Bonneville, Olivia Colman and Jessica Hynes, is going to head to head with Sky Atlantic's period-sitcom Hunderby and Alan Partridge: Welcome to the Places of My Life.

The 23rd film in the Bond franchise, Skyfall, has been nominated for best film. The Sam Mendes' directed action movie, which has already won a number of awards including a Golden Globe for best song, will vie for the top prize against Peter Strickland's Berberian Sound Studio and Bart Layton's documentary The Imposter.

In the literature category, double Man Booker winner Hilary Mantel has been nominated for her epic novel Bring Up The Bodies alongside Will Self's Umbrella and Kerry Hudson's Tony Hogan Bought Me an Ice-Cream Float Before He Stole My Ma.

The annual South Bank Sky Arts Awards aim to honour the UK's acheivements across TV, film, literature, music and theatre.

Host of the awards, Melvyn Bragg, said: "Arriving at this shortlist was a tough job for our judges. Weare proud of this world class list of nominees which recognise and honour the best talent at work in the UK today.”
