When the last ever episode of the hit BBC1 show Merlin was broadcast on Christmas Eve 2012, it brought an end to a show which had won many admirers over its five series run.

Merlin brought a cast of relative newcomers such as Colin Morgan and Katie McGrath together with more seasoned performers like Richard Wilson and the legendary John Hurt, to tell a fascinating tale steeped in Arthurian legend.

It quickly developed into a bona fide smash and was regarded as essential Saturday evening viewing, even spawning its own monthly magazine and an exhibit at Warwick Castle. In fact, the show was so popular with viewers that it beat Doctor Who in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy category of our poll to find the best TV drama of the 21st century, finishing second behind Call The Midwife overall.
