We've hardly been waiting with bated breath for an announcement – HBO would be mad to call time on the hit fantasy series – but now it's official: Game of Thrones has been recommissioned.

The cult favourite, based on the books of fantasy writer George RR Martin, will be back for two more seasons, filled with blood, gore and scenes of a sexual nature, no doubt.

"Game of Thrones is a phenomenon like no other," said Michael Lombardo, HBO's programming president. "David Benioff and DB Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling."

It's the first time HBO has commissioned more than one series at a go – good news for the drama, which seems to be going from strength to strength.

The show's creators recently said they were aiming to make seven seasons of the drama, and this news means we will definitely get to see six. Plot details for these upcoming seasons might still be in the hands of the book's author George RR Martin, though, as he is currently writing the sixth book.

The series is currently at the start of its fourth season, which is airing in the UK one day after it does in the US.

Game of Thrones series four continues on Mondays at 9:00pm on Sky Atlantic
