Al Pacino will star opposite Jeremy Renner and Julianne Moore in the upcoming dramedy, Imagine. Crazy, Stupid, Love writer Dan Fogelman will direct the film based on his own script, which was originally written with Steve Carrell in mind for the lead role.

Pacino, who won an Oscar for his 1992 film Scent Of A Woman, is set to play an ageing rock star who’s still packing out arenas and living the celebrity lifestyle. However, on the discovery of an unwritten letter from his idol John Lennon, he’s inspired to straighten up his act and reconnect both with his estranged son and his music. Renner will star as the aforementioned son, while Moore is set to star as a potential love interest.

The film will mark the directorial debut of Fogelman who’s become hot property in Hollywood after penning money-spinning pictures including animated hits Cars, Bolt and Tangled.

“Every writer has 'that one project' … the one they feel so strongly about that they can’t bear to turn it over to anyone else,” Fogelman told Deadline. “For me, that project is Imagine. It was a career highlight simply to get a script of mine into Al Pacino’s hands. To have him read it, and then want to star in it… it’s five steps past career highlight. And now, to have Julianne Moore and Jeremy join the fray? It’s beyond my wildest dreams. I’ve been hiding in my house for the past few weeks, out of fear that someone would pinch me. We are going to make a very special film here.”
