"In northern Californian there are lots of yoga mats, sensible shoes, Toyota Prius and an inordinate amount of solar power," explains Richman. "Here you'll find the hyper organic and focus on fresh, seasonal and locally sourced. Try nopalito for freshly sourced, superb Mexican. Or head to the Ferry Terminal building and eat everything that’s not nailed down. You can go to the Embarcadero, where the Ferry Terminal is, and just kind of swallow. Chef Chris Cosentino has a sandwich place here called Boccalone and its slogan is ‘tasty salted pig parts’. Other places to try include the Cowgirl Creamery and the Acme Bakery. I’m a sucker for banh mi, and the best banh mi in the world is at a place called Saigon Sandwiches in the Tenderlion district. Being close to Silicon Valley, and surrounded by universities, there’s a very educated populous and tons of money in San Francisco – it’s one of the most expensive places to live in. But food ranges in price – you’ve got sandwich places and in between fine and fun dining like Wexler’s. There’s also a gastro pub by Haight-Ashbury, where the Grateful Dead lived, named The Alembic, and it is superb. It serves stuff like grilled duck hearts, pickled pineapple and olive oil cake – phenomenal. Then, of course, the Mission Burrito was created in the Mission District of San Francisco – go along Mission Street and there are places like El Farolito and El Toro Taqueria, which feature in a chapter in my third book where I’m trying to find the best burrito in the Mission area.
