After 53 years at its Granada base in central Manchester, Coronation Street is on the move to its new purpose-built, state-of-the-art home in Trafford. The street itself is now 2.5 feet wider to allow cars to pass with ease; over 400,000 facing bricks have been used on the lot (144,000 of which were reclaimed from a derelict Salford street); while eagle-eyed fans will have spotted the extra window upstairs at the Rovers Return.

"We want our new home to be a wonderful place in which to work and produce great television drama - and I am sure it will be," executive producer Kieran Roberts said today. "But we don't want viewers switching on one week and saying, 'what have they done to the street?' Everyone on the Coronation Street team works with tremendous skill and a real passion for the show, yet Coronation Street doesn't belong to any of us. It's not our street. It's the nation's street."
