The Vile Victorians, Gorgeous Georgians and Terrible Tudors could all be heading to the big screen before long, as the makers of Horrible Histories are currently in talks to make a feature film spin-off of their critically acclaimed CBBC series.

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, the show’s producer Caroline Norris told a panel: “We are in negotiations on a movie and we’re trying to sort out the rights with a US company.”

If the film does result, Norris says it will take its lead from Monty Python in making the transition from a sketch show to a full-length narrative movie.

Horrible Histories, which began airing on CBBC in 2009 has since earned huge acclaim for the quality of its writing, acting and catchy musical numbers. It has won a number of children’s Baftas and, in 2010, was named Best Sketch Show at the British Comedy Awards, making it the first children’s programme to be recognised at the event.

It’s also proved popular with established British TV stars, having attracted the likes of Chris Addison, Meera Syal and the cast of the League of Gentlemen to make special guest appearances over its four series to date.

Shooting is soon to begin on the show’s fifth run, which will feature new songs including Charles Dickens channelling the spirit of Morrissey, Joan of Arc spoofing Jessie J and a Motown-style number sung by civil rights activist Rosa Parks.
