On June 4 next year, the privately-funded Heathrow Terminal 2, will be set to cater for 20 million passengers.

The original Terminal 2 was demolished in 2009, and the new one designed by Norman Foster will have a wood chip fuelled energy centre, a 1,712ft (522m) satellite pier and a 1,340-space car park.

United Airlines have bagged the first flight arrival. The plane will fly from Chicago into the new terminal.

Approximately 25,000 staff across more than 20 airlines will work out of Terminal 2, serving around 55,000 passengers per day. The building will also have 50 shops and 17 restaurants and bars.

Heathrow development director John Holland-Kaye explained: "Like T5, it will promise world-class customer service and a warm welcome to Britain, which visitors expect from the UK's hub airport."

The first day that Heathrow Terminal 5 opened there were delays and hundreds of bags were lost. To avoid similar chaos, Terminal 2 will open slowly. There will be six months of testing before the new terminal is in full throttle, and only 10 per cent of flights will run out of the airport in the first three weeks.
