Judging by the first trailer for Julian Fellowes' take on Romeo and Juliet, it seems the Downton Abbey creator has gone for a traditional interpretation of the classic Shakespearean story.

Using the original dialogue, period costume and the setting of medieval Italy, the film appears to be a long way from Baz Luhrmann's iconic 1996 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

Our latest star-crossed lovers are Oscar-nominated True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet Capulet and teen heartthrob Douglas Booth as Romeo.

Homeland's Damien Lewis takes on the role of Lord Capulet (complete with questionable haircut), Paul Giamatti plays Friar Laurence and Ed Westwick, who was bad boy Chuck Bass in teen favourite Gossip Girl, is Tybalt. Californication's Natascha McElhone and Mayday's Lesley Manville also star, as Lady Capulet and The Nurse.
