The singer behind hits such as My Coo Ca Choo, I Feel Like Buddy Holly and the 1974 number one Jealous Mind, died at home from metastatic prostate cancer with his family around him, his manager has confirmed. He was 72.

Once described as "the Godfather of British Rock 'n' Roll" by Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards, Stardust made sporadic acting appearances in the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, as well as playing the role of a pub landlord in Jed Mercurio’s late noughties ITV comedy The Grimleys which was set in Birmingham in the 1970s.

Fans will also be familiar with his appearance in a 1976 Green Cross Code advert about road safety in which he told two girls who crossed the road without looking both ways: "Hey! You must be out of your tiny minds."

Stardust – who was born Bernard Jewry in east London – also appeared on stage in musicals such as Godspell, The Phantom of the Opera and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in which he played the Child Catcher.

In November he had been due to release Alvin, his first studio album in 30 years.

In a statement on his official website, Stardust said: "Alvin is a new and exciting departure for me and I'm immensely proud of the finished product and the amazing work of Richard Scott and Scott Ralph of Daftdog Productions in recording and producing it."
