The Theory of Everything's Eddie Redmayne reignited his race for an Oscar at last night's Screen Actors Guild Awards, seeing off competition from hot favourite Michael Keaton to win the leading actor prize.

But Keaton didn't walk away empty handed as the entire cast of Birdman were honoured with outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, triumphing over awards season darling Boyhood and The Imitation Game.

Although their visit to the stage wasn't without its drama as actress Naomi Watts nearly went flying after tripping over co-star Emma Stone's dress:

The leading actress award saw Julianne Moore add to her growing collection of silverware for Still Alice, while J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) continued their dominance of the best supporting actor and actress categories.

The SAG awards – which, like the Golden Globes, also honours the best of the past year's television – handed the top honours to Downton Abbey who won outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series, beating off competition from heavyweights Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Homeland and Boardwalk Empire.

Meanwhile, the ensemble award for a comedy series went to Orange is the New Black, recognised over its rivals The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Veep and Modern Family. The Netflix original added to its haul when Uzo Aduba picked up best actress in a comedy series for her portrayal of Crazy Eyes.

Best actor in a comedy series was awarded to William H. Macy (Shameless), while the leading actor and actress awards in a drama went to House of Cards' Kevin Spacey and Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder).

Over in the miniseries categories, Mark Ruffalo won outstanding performance by a male actor for The Normal Heart, with Frances McDormand receiving the female equivalent for Olive Kitteridge.
