Downton Abbey star Elizabeth McGovern’s band Sadie & the Hotheads will release their second album later this month.

McGovern, who plays Lady Grantham in the hit ITV1 period drama, sings lead vocals in the group and boasts a voice described as being both fragile and husky. Inspired by Leonard Cohen, How Not to Lose Things is said to be the group’s best record to date.

Sadie & the Hotheads first came together in 2005, when McGovern responded to an advert for guitar lessons placed in a local newspaper by Steve Nelson. Their lessons soon turned into writing sessions, and the pair eventually developed a live set.

Joined by Goldfrapp’s Rowan Oliver and musicians Simon Nelson, Ron Knights and Nick Lacey, the band's first album I Can Wait was released in 2007.

Talking about the group, McGovern said: “I am in awe of the musicians who I had the opportunity to work with on this project. They create magic out of thin air! Time and time again, on whatever drafty stage or pub we happened to be in. With good humour and joy in their art, they begin to play. It gives me faith. That it's all worth it, for its own sake and for the joy. This is what I hope we can convey.”

The band will take up residency at the Troubadour in London on Tuesday evenings throughout November to promote the album, which will be released on Monday 29 October.
