Frozen Planet's audience rose by over a million people from the first episode to the second show, according to overnight ratings.

Last week, David Attenborough's enchanting series premiered with a very respectable 6.8 million viewers (a 27.4 per cent audience share).

However, the landmark documentary, which chronicles life in and around the poles, increased its audience by 16 per cent this week. Last night 7.9 million viewers watched between 9pm and 10pm on BBC1 and BBC1 HD, a 31.4 per cent share of all television viewers at that time.

Frozen Planet continued to dominate the 9pm slot on terrestrial television, easily beating ITV1's Champions League coverage of Manchester City versus Villarreal - which could only manage an average audience of 3.5 million viewers (a 14.3 per cent share) from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Elsewhere between 9pm and 10pm, BBC2's Secret Pakistan was watched by 1 million people (a 4.1 per cent share), Grand Designs attracted 2.6 million viewers (a 10.3 per cent share) to Channel 4 and Paul Merton's Adventures on Channel 5 was watched by 900,000 people (a 3.5 per cent share).
