The French dance music duo took home five prizes at the star-studded bash at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, including album of the year, record of the year, dance album of the year, pop duo performance and engineered album.

Hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home four awards for best new artist, best rap album, song and performance, while Justin Timberblake bagged three gongs.

Newcomer Lorde also took home prizes at her first Grammy awards. The 17-year-old from New Zealand, who was relatively unknown this time last year, won song of the year as well as best pop solo performance, beating off competition from the likes of Katy Perry, Pink, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake.

Other winners included Paul McCartney, who reunited with his former bandmate Ringo Starr for a special performance on the night, as the Beatles also picked up a Lifetime Achievement award. Led Zeppelin took home best rock album for Celebration Day, and Londoner Adele was awarded best song written for visual media for her James Bond theme Skyfall.

British acts Ed Sheeran, James Blake, Florence Welch, Calvin Harris and Disclosure were all nominated for awards this year but lost out. As did David Bowie, who had been nominated for best rock album and best rock performance after his 2013 comeback with The Next Day.
