Legendary naturalist David Attenborough spends the night in London’s Natural History Museum as the long-extinct exhibits magically come back to life. (It’s just like that Ben Stiller film…) Attenborough travels back in time investigating the lives of the museums’ inhabitants and interacting with dinosaurs, giant reptiles and the dodo.

Blackadder, from 7:00pm, Dave

Forget comfort food or hair of the dog, an evening snuggled up with Blackadder is the way to cure your 1 January hangover. From 7:00pm, Dave are showing a run of episodes voted for by Blackadder fans. Contenders include series two’s Potato, series three’s Ink and Incapability and, of course, the poignant series four finale, in which not even a cunning plan can save Blackadder and co from going over the top.

EastEnders, 8:00pm, BBC1

While we clear up from the night before, the same is happening over in the square. But Ronnie has a different reason for disposing with her Champagne bottle, having used it to thump a certain over-amorous male. Phil is on hand to help her tidy a few things up. Who knew he was such a domestic goddess?

Sherlock, 9:00pm, BBC1

Brace yourselves, Sherlock fans. After two years, the hit BBC1 detective drama is back. And Holmes is ready to return to the land of the living. John Watson, who coincidentally has grown an unwise moustache, has finally moved on from the death of his dear friend and got himself a girlfriend. But the consulting detective has decided to resurface from his apparent demise, just as London is threatened by a huge terrorist attack.

Will he destroy Watson’s new found peace? And will we find out how he survived that fall?

David Blaine: Real or Magic, 9:00pm, Channel 4

David Blaine is well known for death-defying stunts, but this New Year's Day special sees him return to subtler slight of hand tricks. Blaine performs card tricks and makes banknotes reappear for excited members of the public and celebrities, including Stephen Hawking, Ricky Gervais, George W Bush, Harrison Ford and Will Smith.
