Charlie Sheen is to follow in his father Martin’s footsteps and take on the role of the President of the United States.

But rather than an accurately portrayed, feel-good drama series like The West Wing, Sheen Jr will star in a violence-laden exploitation movie - Robert Rodriquez’s Machete Kills.

Director Rodriguez announced the news on Twitter last night, saying “I just cast Charlie Sheen in#machetekills as the President of the United States! Who better? More soon…” with Sheen quickly retweeting the message.

Currently in production, Machete Kills is the sequel to Rodriguez’s 2010 movie about a Mexican cop-turned-mercenary, which was itself based on a fake movie trailer Rodriguez made to accompany screenings of his previous exploitation pastiche Grindhouse.

Danny Trejo reprises his role as Machete, with Jessica Alba also returning and Mel Gibson, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara and Zoe Saldana signed up too.

The sequel sees Machete hired by the US government to take on a cartel leader and an arms dealer who have launched a super-weapon into space.
