Will Ferrell and John C Reilly set to play Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in new comedy film
“So much room for crime-fighting!”
Move over, Benedict Cumberbatch, there’s a new Sherlock Holmes in town (well, until series four finally comes out next year. Please hurry up with that, Benedict!). Will Ferrell will play Arthur Conan’s Doyle most famous creation, alongside his Step Brothers co-star John C Reilly as Watson.
And no, before you ask, it won’t be (another) serious take on the detective duo. According to Hollywood insiders Deadline, the film will be penned and directed by Etan Cohen, the man behind Tropic Thunder and Get Hard. In other words, expect less heart-racing puzzle-solving and more of this in Victorian costume…
Although Ferrell has been attached to play the detective since the project was first mooted some years ago, Watson’s part was originally intended for Sacha Baron Cohen. However, after things stalled Baron Cohen dropped out.
Producers Sony haven’t given a release date for the film, but Ferrell and Reilly have plenty of upcoming projects due to hit the screen.
Ferrell will appear in James Franco's new movie, Zeroville, next year. Plus, Reilly is slated in several 2017 films, including a Laurel and Hardy biopic with Steve Coogan.
So while the game may not quite be afoot, it is at least standing by the front door about to put on its shoes.
