ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY
Vacancy ★★★★
11.10pm-12.55am Movie Mix
Director Nimrod Antal’s movie is a high concept, low-budget tale with a nasty streak, and it doesn’t take long to work out that the young couple who check in to a creepy motel after a wrong turn will wish they hadn’t. Played by Kate Beckinsale and the less charismatic of the Wilson brothers, Luke, they make a terrifying discovery and decide to leave. Though I think you can guess that complications ensue. All of the action takes place at the motel, so the shocks and twists are imaginatively staged, but it’s a straightforward piece of audience manipulation, whose plot worryingly hinges on a handy lack of mobile phone coverage. By the way, if you’re short of time, the trailer for the movie is almost as effective as the full-length feature.
Roxanne ★★★★
9.00-11.10pm Movie Mix
Funnyman Steve Martin gives one of his most delicately funny turns in this whimsical update of the love story Cyrano de Bergerac — even with a big comedy nose. Daryl Hannah is the object of his affection.
The Possibilities Are Endless ★★★★
PREMIERE 11.25pm-1.10am Film4
Perhaps best known for his 1994 hit A Girl Like You, this poignant documentary reveals how Scottish singer/musician Edwyn Collins has adapted to life after two brain haemorrhages.
The Replacement Killers ★★★
12.55-2.45am Movie Mix
'Kill or be replaced' is the tagline for this martial-arts ballet, a virtually plotless excuse for minutely choreographed set-pieces performed with majesterial ease by Chow Yun-Fat.
