Comedy mogul Judd Apatow always seems on the verge of a critical backlash — usually precipitated by the thinking that he’s at heart a conservative who can’t write for women. Those barbs came when he put out this “sort-of sequel to Knocked Up”, an age-specific midlife comedy that revisits the bumpy family life of likeable LA marrieds Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), coping with strains domestic, sexual and financial. The pitch of crisis is soundtracked by a bickering Cold War between daughters Maude and Iris, 13 and eight (real-life progenies of Apatow and Mann). Trademark potty-mouthed argot; the obligatory calamitous birthday party; turns from regulars Chris O’Dowd, Jason Segel and a freewheeling Melissa McCarthy — it’s all very familiar. But the surprise is how sad and honest it is beneath the scatology and quipping. As long as you feel sorry for the white middle classes, it’s fine. Albeit about 20 minutes too long.
