ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY

The Hunger Games ★★★★
9.00-11.45pm Film Four

The final episode of the dramatisation of Suzanne Collins’s trilogy of dystopian young adult novels, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, is in cinemas now, adding to a franchise that’s already taken $2.3 billion worldwide. Should you wish to belatedly hop aboard, this is the first instalment, when Jennifer Lawrence added the string of action heroine to her bow. As Katniss Everdeen, she’s recruited to take part in the titular youth tournament in a totalitarian two-tier society of the future, and must kill or be killed in a televised grudge match. I found the social satire unsubtle — the rich, embodied by Stanley Tucci’s MC, Donald Sutherland’s president and Elizabeth Banks’s chaperone, are irksome pompadoured dandies — and the Games are oddly bloodless, in deference to the cinema’s 12A certificate. But Gary Ross directs with cut and thrust, and the compelling Lawrence is a certified leading woman.

The Wild Geese ★★★
10.00pm-12.35am C5

Expendables eat your heart out! Richards Burton and Harris (and Roger Moore on leave from 007) take no prisoners when they lead a bunch of geriatric mercenaries on a mission to rescue a deposed African leader. OK, it's violent nonsense from the politically incorrect 1970s but a cast of superstars and ruddy-faced British character actors playing it tough can't be all bad.

Wayne's World ★★★★
9.00-11.00pm 5★

The slacker dudes who had the world quoting their gormless teen-speak make their sparkling HD debut but thankfully their befuddled responses to reality are still hilariously out of focus.

Sabrina ★★★★★
12.35-2.50pm Film Four

Audrey Hepburn illuminates the screen as the chauffeur's daughter torn between two well-to-do brothers (played by William Holden and Humphrey Bogart) in Billy Wilder's witty and sophisticated comedy. But who will she pick?

Walk the Line ★★★★
9.00-11.45pm Movie Mix

Back before his apparent meltdown, Joaquin Phoenix gave a fabulous performance as legendary singer Johnny Cash, though it was Reese Witherspoon who won the Oscar as wife June Carter.
