ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY
Snow White and the Huntsman ★★★
9.00-11.25pm Film4
Cinderella, Hansel & Gretel and Snow White have all recently enjoyed modern interpretations and the industry standard for such is tween-aimed, CGI-heavy action fantasy adventure. Snow White and the Huntsman plays that card without restraint. If you liked Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood, you’ll love the way director Rupert Sanders whips this into a thudding medieval-ish epic, with no less than Twilight’s Kristen Stewart as the scowly, armour-plated Amazonian warrior version of the title character. There are eight dwarves, too, but they’re not very funny, and Chris Hemsworth channels Thor as the hunk of a huntsman sent by Charlize Theron’s pantomimically evil Queen to kill the apple-muncher. It looks great, but lacks heart, and you may yearn for the romance and fidelity of Disney’s recent live-action take on Cinderella.
Genevieve ★★★★
11.40am-1.25pm More4
This vintage comedy about two couples challenging each other to a road race from London to Brighton in their classic cars is marinaded in nostalgia and a beautiful cinematography that captures a world long gone.
Only You ★★★★
6.45-9.00pm Movie Mix
The premise of this reassuringly old-fashioned romance is a kooky one, and finds Marisa Tomei running out on her own wedding to fulfil a romantic prediction. But is Robert Downey Jr really the one for her?
Labyrinth ★★★
8.00-10.00pm 5★
Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom, The Thin White Duke... David Bowie's chameleonic ability to inhabit different characters serves him well here, playing Jareth, the flamboyantly attired and frightwig-barneted goblin king. A fuzzy, family-friendly fantasy from Muppets creator Jim Henson.
Legends of the Fall ★★★★
9.00-11.45pm Movie Mix
Anthony Hopkins tries to hold his family together in the shadow of history-shaping world events in this old-school epic. His boys are played by Aidan Quinn (best remembered as Dez from Desperately Seeking Susan), Henry Thomas (Elliott from ET) and Brad Pitt (umm… sorry, drawn a blank there).
