ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY
Sister Act ★★★★

With the musical version set to tour the UK from July (its second such run), why not revisit the original 1992 movie? Whoopi Goldberg, then Hollywood royalty after Ghost and The Color Purple, plays “Sister Mary Clarence” — actually Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer forced into hiding after witnessing a Mob hit. In witness protection, she’s relocated to a rundown San Francisco convent where only Maggie Smith’s Mother Superior knows her real situation. After some resistance, she joins the choir and transforms it, using her soulful instincts. Whoopi becomes a community hero, until a police leak puts the convent in jeopardy. A big hit at the time, like the stage version it runs on an irresistible level of energy and great gospelly numbers.

The War of the Worlds ★★★★
5.00-6.45pm Film4

One of the classics from the golden age of sci-fi movies, this update of HG Well's tale sees Earth helpless in the face of the Martian death ray.

Skyfall ★★★★★
9.00-11.55pm ITV2

Bond smashed box office records thanks to a mean and moody Daniel Craig and a shocking, melodramatic twist from director Sam Mendes.

The Brides of Dracula ★★★★
9.00-10.45pm Horror Channel

The dead Count (well, a descendent, anyway) walks the Earth again, but Peter Cushing's Van Helsing takes the applause for his performance in this stylish Hammer follow-up to Dracula.

The Kingdom ★★★
10.00pm-12.15am ITV4

The complications of Middle Eastern terrorism are simplified by the Hollywood steamroller here, as Jamie Foxx and his FBI colleagues investigate a bombing in Saudi Arabia.
