ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY

Ad

Point Break ★★★★
11.20pm-1.50am Spike

Almost two decades before Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the best director Oscar for The Hurt Locker, she made one of the great surfing thrillers. Point Break is also essentially a film about men: Keanu Reeves’s undercover FBI agent Johnny Utah and the group of bank-robbing surfers he must infiltrate in order to expose. It is the blossoming, arguably homoerotic, friendship between their leader, a sun-bleached Patrick Swayze, and Keanu’s duplicitous Fed that makes the film so watchable all these years later. The action scenes — surfing, skydiving, running, fighting — are also part of the appeal. Its cult status was confirmed in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s cop comedy Hot Fuzz, in which key scenes are re-created not in Malibu but Somerset.

Pitch Black ★★★★
11.00pm-1.10am ITV2

Afraid of the dark? The crew of a crashed transport ship has to rely on criminal Vin Diesel's eyes when the strange planet's total eclipse brings flesh-eating creatures out into the open.

American Psycho ★★★★
10.50pm-12.50am Horror Channel

Christian Bale makes a worryingly convincing yuppie killer in Mary Harron's entertainingly grim and satirical black comedy. You'll never listen to Genesis again, which may not be such a bad thing.

An Inspector Calls ★★★★
11.50am-1.25pm More4

Alastair Sim is the mystery man whose leading questions expose the hypocrisy of an upper class family in this 1954 adaptation of JB Priestley's classic play.

PREMIERE

Anton Corbijn: Inside Out ★★★

This documentary on the Dutch music photographer sees the cameras pointing the other way for once to examine his iconic pictures of bands like Joy Division, U2 and Depeche Mode.
