If you were unfortunate enough to see Sean Penn in action thriller The Gunman, in which his chief aim was to show off his ridiculously gym-pumped torso (which made his 55-year-old head look as if it had been stuck on a younger man’s body), let us remind ourselves why his reputation is so august. He won the best actor Oscar in 2009 for his humane performance as Harvey Milk in director Gus Van Sant’s intelligent biopic of the first openly gay public official in California. Penn transforms his body in a good way to inhabit the initially sexually reticent personality of Milk, who moves to San Francisco’s gay-friendly Castro district in 1972 and finds his calling: to seek equal rights and, later, to oppose Proposition 6, banning gays from working in schools. Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna and Alison Pill are excellent as his compadres, but Josh Brolin dominates as Milk’s conservative nemesis. A moving and informative piece.
