ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY
PREMIERE Les Miserables ★★★
9.00pm-12.10am C4

An intolerance to musicals in my adolescence gave way to an appreciation of the all-singing, all-hoofing genre in adulthood, and I now approach them with an open heart. I first became familiar with Victor Hugo’s account of the 1832 Paris uprising, and the feud between wrongly imprisoned peasant Valjean and grumpy Inspector Javert, thanks to the non-musical 1978 TV movie. So I came to this full-scale conversion of the long-running stage show without a working knowledge of the songs to raise my expectations. Under the direction of Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech), its an overlong piece, but one driven by conviction. Anne Hathaway does not let vanity get in the way of her turn as the tragic Fantine, Russell Crowe’s singing voice is fine, while Eddie Redmayne shines as the revolutionary stude. All in all, it makes for a torrid epic.

Snitch ★★★
PREMIERE 9.00-11.15pm C5

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson tries his hand at some acting in a socially conscious drama about a dad whose son is the victim of draconian legislation. Oh, and some people get their butts kicked too.

Fight Club ★★★★★
11.15pm-1.50am C5

"The first rule of Fight Club is..." Well, you know the rest. But no matter how many times you see it, Fincher's thriller stands up to another viewing.

Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time ★★★
9.00-10.50pm BBC3

A few sandstorms can’t tarnish the gloss of this sword 'n' sandals caper, but it's Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton who make it worth your time.

Warrior ★★★★
10.00pm-12.45am Spike
