The first Knives Out film featured a pretty star-studded cast, but if the confirmed line-up for the sequel is anything to go by, it seems like writer/director Rian Johnson was only just getting started.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr. are the latest stars to join the cast of the Knives Out sequel.

And according to Deadline, Dave Bautista has also signed up to appear in Knives Out 2, with the Guardians of the Galaxy actor set to play a new character alongside returning star Daniel Craig.

Deadline also reports that Birdman's Edward Norton has been cast in the hotly anticipated film, as well as WandaVision's Kathryn Hahn.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter previously claimed Janelle Monae has also bagged herself a role.

Specific plot details are under wraps so far, but we can safely assume that Craig's Southern detective Benoit Blanc will once again be tasked with solving a mystery that involves several suspects.

The first film was a major hit, grossing more than £311million at the global box office, and hopes are high for the sequels after Netflix stumped up a whopping £450million to land the rights.

Rian Johnson is once again writing and directing, and there's no doubt he'll be hoping to bring together a cast every bit as formidable as was the one for the first film – which included the likes of Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collete and Michael Shannon.

Read on for everything you need to know about Knives Out 2, including all the latest casting announcements and plot details as they emerge.

When is Knives Out 2 on Netflix?

Knives Out 2 was officially given the go ahead by production company Lionsgate in February 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic prevented filming from starting.

Now the movie has a new home on Netflix – and with filming set to commence on 28th June 202, the sequel could be released as early as next year.

The first Knives Out began filming in October 2018, wrapped in December 2018, and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in December 2019, so the second movie could follow a similar timeline.

Knives Out 2 cast

The full cast of Knives Out 2 hasn't been announced yet, but we do know that Daniel Craig will be returning in the lead role as Benoit Blanc. And we expect a number of other big names to join him in due course.

Kate Hudson is the latest star reported to be attached to the film, her casting coming days after news that the movie had hired Leslie Odom Jr. following his Oscar nomination for One Night in Miami.

Another star who appears to have signed on is Dave Bautista, whose involvement was reported by Deadline on 10th May – although Netflix has not confirmed the news at this stage. Deadline followed up with a report on 11th May saying that Edward Norton has also been cast in the film, although again there is no official word from Netflix just yet.

On 12th May, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Janelle Monae would star in the film. The response from Netflix? You guessed it - no comment.

On 13th May, Deadline had another big announcement - WandaVision star Kathryn Hahn is joining the cast too.

The first Knives Out was an extremely star-studded affair, with Craig joined by Chris Evans as the unruly Ransom Drysdale, Jamie Lee Curtis as Ransom’s mother Linda Drysdale and Christopher Plummer as Harlan Thrombey.

The flick also featured rising stars Ana de Armas as Harlan’s nurse Marta Cabrera, Katherine Langford as Meg Thrombey and Jaeden Martell as Jacob Thrombey.

Besides Craig, none of the other original cast members have been confirmed. Indeed, Jamie Lee Curtis recently took to Instagram to hint the Drysdale family would not be making a comeback, joking they were in counselling and their “therapist suggested they stay away from Benoit Blanc in the future”.

She added: “As the family spokesperson we wish the filmmakers all our best in their new venture.”

Knives Out 2 trailer

A trailer for the upcoming film is yet to be released.

However, you can watch the trailer from the first movie here…

Will Ana de Armas appear in Knives Out 2?

While the full cast for Knives Out 2 has yet to be announced, Ana de Armas has revealed hopes she will work with director Rian Johnson again.

She previously told Flaunt: “I hope this is one of those surprises that 2021 will bring for me, a phone call from Rian!”

What is Knives Out 2 about?

A return to the Thrombey’s New England family home is unlikely as Benoit Blanc is going to Greece.

Talk of how a sequel to Knives Out may look has been ongoing since the original release, but Rian Johnson has made clear that future films will be part of an anthology of standalone stories, rather than a continuation of the previous plot.

In February 2020, he told The Hollywood Reporter: “Think of it just like another Hercule Poirot novel from Agatha Christie, so a whole new location, whole new cast.”
