This Northampton-set true-life tale centres around an ailing shoe factory (in reality, WJ Brooks), which averts closure by moving into the men’s fetish footwear market. There’s much in common with Calendar Girls, with both films co-produced by Harbour Pictures and co-written by Tim Firth, and it shares a similar theme of conservative values being defeated by sexual liberation. Australian Joel Edgerton (now a pumped-up leading man in Warrior and Exodus: Gods and Kings) cracks the difficult Northampton accent as the heir of the family firm whose fortunes change when he meets Soho drag queen Lola and decides to cater for the transvestite market. Lola is played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, the Oscar-nominated star of 12 Years a Slave. He energises the film, which, under the sure direction of Julian Jarrold, teeters towards a feel-good conclusion. Kinky Boots isn’t the equal of the similar feeling Full Monty, but it takes place in my home town so I love it.

After Buffy but before he assembled The Avengers, Joss Whedon made short-lived cult sci-fi TV show Firefly. This big-screen spin-off stars Nathan Fillion as the maverick starship-captain hero.

Doubt ★★★

Meryl Streep is on fine form here as a reactionary nun convinced a liberal school priest is up to no good. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis round out the powerhouse cast, and all four actors were Oscar nominated for their performances.

Twisted Nerve ★★★
10.50pm-1.05am Horror Channel

This none-to-subtle Brit-horror curio finds Hayley Mills terrorised by a disturbed Hywel Bennett. You may recognise the chilling Bernard Herrmann whistled theme tune, as Quentin Tarantino pinched it for Kill Bill Vol 1.

"The first rule of Fight Club is..." Well, you probably know the rest. But no matter how many times you see it, David Fincher's knockout thriller always stands up to another viewing.
