Could Lando Calrissian get his own Star Wars spin-off?

The man who penned the script for the upcoming Star Wars sequel – as well as arguably the best Star Wars film of all time, The Empire Strikes Back – told Vanity Fair that while he wouldn't be popping up in The Force Awakens, Lando's not done just yet.

"Right now, there’s no Lando Calrissian in this movie" he said, "but Lando I don’t think is finished in any way, shape, or form."

His comments may not come as too much of a surprise, given the fact that Williams has already returned to voice an animated version of Lando in animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Marvel is also set to launch a Lando Calrissian comic series this July. It's just one of a whole host of new comics and books they'll use to fill in the gaps between the movies before The Force Awakens is released.

Set before The Empire Strikes Back, Lando will catch up with Calrissian when he's lost the Millennium Falcon and is scrabbling around, trying to figure out what he’s going to do with his life.

"Ultimately, it’s sort of a heist tale," writer Charles Soule told Marvel. "Lando assembles a crew and goes on a mission that he hopes will put him on top. Note that I don’t say 'back on top', because Lando’s never been on top, at least as I’m writing him. But this time… this one last score… you know how it goes."

It's not the first time Lando's landed his own series in print either. Back in 1983 fans for their first taste of The Lando Calrissian Adventures, a series of novels by L Neil Smith, following his journey as captain of the Millennium Falcon before he lost it to Han Solo.

With so much source material out there, we could be forgiven for wondering if a bit part in a Star Wars sequel might not go far enough to satisfy fans at this stage?

Couldn't Lando lead his very own Star Wars spin-off? Or perhaps a TV series?

If Boba Fett can do it, surely he can too.
