Michael Redgrave and Michael Denison are clipped and composed as the gentlemen of leisure, whose innocent deceptions imperil their romantic aspirations towards the coquettish Joan Greenwood and Dorothy Tutin. “A handbag” is one of British cinema’s great moments.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – 2:30pm, Film4

Escapism for all of the family, the younger Pevensies, Lucy and Edmund and their insufferable cousin Eustace are whisked aboard the buccaneering ship of King Caspian and must contend with evil slave-traders, a creepy mansion, a golden dragon and a scary sea serpent. A thrilling journey.

National Treasure – 3:45pm, BBC1

Nicholas Cage leads this hunt for lost treasure that has been cast off as an old wives’ tale. He’s got his family name to restore in the academic community, baddies to fend off and the girl to get all at once. A fun family adventure.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – 6:00pm, Channel 5

Johnny Depp is at the helm of this re-telling of Roald Dahl’s famous story. A poor boy (played by Finding Neverland’s likeable Freddie Highmore) strikes it lucky with Golden Ticket and wins a guided tour of the chocolate factory. There’s singing, there’s mean children getting their sweet-covered comeuppance and a decidedly creepy Wonka. You may prefer the original, but this is a brightly-coloured delight.

Calendar Girls – 6:50pm, Watch

The local ladies of the Women’s Institute decide to make a tastefully nude calendar to raise money for the local hospital after the death of their friend’s husband. But they never expected the success and global recognition the calendar would enjoy and their sudden fame tests their friendships and relationships to the limit.

The Matrix – 9:00pm, 5*

Keanu Reeves leads this modern classic, which on its release, took a quantum leap in special effects. Is life just a façade? It’s up to computer hacker Neo to figure it out. Thinking caps on for this one…
