15 films to inspire travel in 2015

It doesn’t get more iconic than the powerful combination of Sherlock and London. Mr Holmes follows Ian McKellen as a retired Sherlock Holmes in 1947, who now lives on a farm in Sussex, the movie flashes back to the past, where we see the celebrity sleuth in his familiar hunting ground – Baker Street and the streets of London.

Set for release: June 19th

4. Spectre

Bond is back, and, as you would expect, he’s off to another handful of exotic locations, this time 007 jets off to snowy Austria, historic Rome, and desert Morocco. Daniel Craig will star alongside by Lea Seydoux, Monica Bellucci and Christoph Waltz in his fourth outing as Bond, in which he’ll go on a mission to uncover a sinister organisation while M has to try and keep the secret service alive in London.

Set for release: October 23rd

3. The Sea of Trees

Gus Van Sant's new survival drama, starring Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe and Naomi Watts, sees a depressed American befriend a Japanese man, who's lost in Aokigahara forest aka the Sea of Trees, in Japan. The two anguished wanderers search for a way out. In reality, Aokigahara is very disorientating, hikers and walkers often used plastic tape to mark their routes through the dense forest, but the Ice and Wind Caves are worth the risk.

Set for release: Late 2015

2. A Walk in the Woods

Based on the memoirs of Bill Bryson, Robert Redford plays the humorous writer when he returns to America, after spending two decades in the UK. He decides to get back to his routes with a trek along the Appalachian Trail, a mammoth path that runs from Georgia to Maine. Nick Offerman and Emma Thompson will also star in the movie, filmed in America’s wilderness.

Set for release: Mid-late 2015

1. Everest

Jake Gyllenhaal and Sam Worthington star as two of the several climbers on the ill-fated Everest expedition led by Rob Hall, played by Zero Dark Thirty actor Jason Clarke, in 1996. The movie will follow these brave explorers as they attempt one of the most dangerous climbs on earth and get caught in a severe blizzard. Sensibly, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur decided to film somewhere a lot more manageable – Italy’s ski resort of Val Senales. Yet principle photography was taken in Nepal’s fascinating capital Kathmandu.
