Adam Sandler stars here as Jakub, an astronaut who bravely volunteers for a solo research mission to the edge of our solar system - much to the dismay of his pregnant wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan). Six months in, Jakub realises he may be losing her, and spirals into a depression. Meanwhile, a memory-hungry, spider-like creature lurks in his ship. Spaceman benefits from an impressive cast (including Paul Dano and Isabella Rossellini), a beautiful score by Max Richter, and visuals that switch between epic space compositions to pleasingly lo-fi vignettes of the past. However, the story drifts as slowly as a droplet in zero gravity, both poignant and a little dull. The trope-heavy premise of a lonely, haunted astronaut isn't reinvented by the introduction of a "failing marriage" plot, and the ending feels too neat to leave a lasting impression. That said, while it doesn't hold up to similar films such as Moon and Solaris, it is still a worthwhile watch for fans of cerebral sci-fi.
