The world was rocked by the sad death of author Terry Pratchett in March, whose Discworld novels sold millions of copies around the globe and had legions of devoted fans who were left emotional by his passing.

One such fan was Blackadder and Time Team star Tony Robinson, who narrated the audiobooks of Pratchett’s works and told RadioTimes.com that work recording the author’s final (and posthumous) novel (The Shepherd’s Crown) was “strangely emotional”.

“Terry wore his emotions very close to his sleeve, and I wasn’t expecting to be that moved by doing the actual recording,” he told us.

“But the people I was working with, I’d been working with on the Terry Pratchett project for the last 20 years or so. So we’ve all grown older and hopefully just a tiny bit wiser together.”

He went on: “Being aware we’d no longer have the pleasure of being surprised by the wit and perception of a new Terry Pratchett I think yes, it did…we were all touched, much more than we imagined we would be.”

Robinson also revealed to RadioTimes.com that he had tried to sneak in a surreptitious farewell to Pratchett during the recording – though he said he wasn’t sure if it would survive the editing process.

“At the very end, whether the publishers will keep it in or not I don’t know, but at the end of the book, the book ends and there is silence, and then I say ‘Goodbye Terry.’”

He concluded: “That’s just a little idea we all had in that moment, but it just felt appropriate.”
